In the escalating drama of the AI world, DeepSeek is solidifying its notorious reputation. The AI behemoth recently launched its robust reasoning model R1-0528, wowing us with its capacity to crush math and coding benchmarks. Yet, as consumers, we’re left questioning: did they train it the hard way, or are they borrowing someone else’s

Controversy is entwined with the DeepSeek name, due in part to prior questionable AI conduct. In the recent past, we found that one of its models shockingly identified itself as ChatGPT. Cue gasps of surprise, or more accurately, not at all. To add to this, earlier this year, DeepSeek found itself under scrutiny for suspicious data scraping activity linked to OpenAI developer accounts. It’s like watching a rerun of your least favorite movie, isn’t it?

Now, I’m not here to point fingers. However, the recent revelations by Australian developer, Sam Paech, suggest an uncanny similarity between the language used by DeepSeek’s R1-0528 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro. It’s as though the AI models attended the same language school. Another developer noted that the AI model’s reasoning processes were hauntingly familiar to those of Gemini. Again, cue gasps of mock surprise.

While it’s not technically illegal to use distillation – the process of training your AI using knowledge from a more powerful model – it sure does seem to go against what OpenAI stands for, especially if it’s used for a rival platform. In response to the unfolding drama, AI entities are imposing stricter restrictions, including requiring government-issued IDs to access specific tools. Unsurprisingly, China is not on the list.

With AI titan Google now scrambling Gemini’s output trails to protect its uniqueness, it’s evident now more than ever the importance of safeguarding their distinguishing features.

So, while this newest AI drama unfurls, it’s essential not only to revel in the theatrics but also to understand the broader implications for consumers and large brands alike. The big takeaway?
